Dr. Mario Vivero Espinoza-Kulick, MA, PhD (pronoun: He) is an Instructor of Ethnic Studies at Cuesta College, Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies Community College Faculty Fellow, poet, scholar, and author. He resides in Santa Maria, CA, and has lived in Santa Barbara County for over 5 years. He received a BA in Comparative Ethnic Studies from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and his MA and Ph.D. in Sociology were achieved at the University of California, Santa Barbara, as a Health Policy Research Scholar funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. His work with and for Chicanx and Latinx communities is deeply rooted in a commitment to family and community on California's Central Coast and in Michoacán, Mexico (Purépecha.) He studies the health of immigrants because he knows first-hand the difficulties and barriers that immigrant families face in accessing health care. Dr. Espinoza-Kulick shares stories about culture, health equity, and community leadership as a host of Central Coast Voices on the National Public Radio (NPR) station KCBX. His work has been published in academic venues, such as Oxford University Press and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and he is the co-author of two Open Educational Resource (OER) textbooks, Introduction to Ethnic Studies and New Directions in Chicanx and Latinx Studies, which are available on LibreTexts. Dr. Espinoza-Kulick serves on the Board for Corazón del Pueblo: The Cultural and Creative Arts Center of the Santa Maria Valley as Secretary and Arts for the People Chair. He also serves as a Board Member for Access Support Network, an organization serving HIV and HCV-affected communities in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Monterey counties.

Reside en Santa María, California, y vive en el condado de Santa Bárbara desde hace más de cinco años. Dr. Alex Espinoza-Kulick is an Instructor of Addiction Studies, Social Work, and Human Services at Cuesta College. His research and teaching focuses on leveraging community assets to increase opportunities for wellbeing and close persistent equity gaps. He earned a PhD and MA in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a BA in Women’s Studies with High Honors from the University of Michigan, with minors in Mathematics and Community Action and Social Change. His work can be found in a range of academic venues, such as the Journal of Adolescence, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Children and Youth Services Review, and Journal of Community Practice.

El Dr. Alex Espinoza-Kulick es Instructor de Estudios de Adicciones, Trabajo Social y Servicios Humanos en Cuesta College. I recently started working with Dr. Mario on this project but I've already learned so much. He's been a great mentor in guiding me throughout the project. I've always wanted to help when it comes to our immigrant community because not too many are aware of the barriers our people go through when it comes to health care. Although I do encounter some barriers within my understanding of certain social problems, this project has helped me and those who don't feel like they have a voice, to speak up about the problems they constantly have to navigate. I have experience with fundriasers and grocery drive-throughs and holiday baskets that help my own Hispanic, spanish speaking community back home. However by raising awareness on these specific topics, I hope to educate those not only in my community but those who work in unison with our community so that we may provide better access and treatment for our people who struggle to find assistance in many areas. Not only am I educating myself throughout this process but I'm also working my best to educate others and I'm excited for what the future holds.
Hace poco que he empezado a trabajar con el Dr. Mario en este proyecto, pero ya he aprendido mucho. Siempre he querido ayudar a nuestra comunidad inmigrante, porque no muchos son conscientes de las barreras a las que se enfrenta nuestra gente cuando se trata de atención sanitaria. Aunque encuentro algunas barreras dentro de mi comprensión de ciertos problemas sociales, este proyecto ha ayudado a aquellos que no sienten que tienen una voz, a hablar sobre los problemas que constantemente tienen que navegar. Tengo experiencia con fundriasers y autoservicios de comestibles y ayudar a las familias durante las vacaciones que ayudan a mi propia comunidad hispana, de habla española de vuelta a casa. Sin embargo, mediante la sensibilización sobre estos temas específicos, espero educar no sólo a los de mi comunidad, sino a los que trabajan al unísono con nuestra comunidad para que podamos proporcionar un mejor acceso y tratamiento para nuestra gente que lucha por encontrar ayuda en muchas áreas. No sólo me estoy educando a mí mismo a lo largo de este proceso, sino que también estoy haciendo todo lo posible para educar a los demás y estoy entusiasmado con lo que nos depara el futuro.
